A VARIETY OF EVENTS

MPPI Quilting Adventures Blog – November 2013

This blog has been a long time coming.  The best Secretary ever filled in for me whilst Drew and I were overseas – a bucket list to Canada, Greece and the UK including London, Ireland and Scotland spending quality time with family and friends.  Thanks Margaret – your contribution to the blog has been excellent.

We arrived home at the end of September 2013 and got back into the MPPI duties with a vengeance.  Naturally the whole group has been as busy as ever producing Calico dolls for the hospital and comfort quilts for a variety of nursing homes, hospitals and organisations.  We have a very generous and prolific group of quilters within our club.

During this month we had the opening of the Christmas Exhibition of the Johnston Collection to which many Art and Craft Guilds from the Mornington Peninsula have contributed.  Between us all we decorated “Fairhall” with “Tales of Christmas Treasures” inspired by the Collection. MPPI decorated the Yellow Room with a beautiful Christmas dining setting including mats, bonbons, napkin rings, a table runner, another beautiful table runner on a dresser, a gorgeous quilt made by our very artistic Coordinator Lyn Wright, a bowl of fruit, an interesting swag for the fireplace, a delightful Applique wall hanging and various colourful Christmas cards made of cloth.

It’s now time to brag about the MPPI Bi-Annual Quilt Exhibition held at Toorak College in Mount Eliza on 16/17 November 2013, the profits from which will be donated to the Mornington Peninsula Youth Enterprises.

Welcome to the 2013 MPPI Quilt Exhibition

Margaret Roberts with Sarah Simcock, Exhibition Coordinator
The theme this year was “Under the Sea” and  more creativity was produced from a large team of our members in the form of marine style decorations , challenge blocks and postcards, as well as a variety of large quilts and small Comfort Quilts displayed in the big  gymnasium hall.

The place was buzzing all weekend with visitors and a number of traders selling their wares. All the traders donated a percentage of their takings to MPPI for our charity.

Present were Bob and Dot from Jarrah Lacky, Designer and Manufacturer  of needlework stands and accessories as well as beautiful beading jewellery www.jarrahlacky.com.au - thanks for all the donations Bob.
Lynda Sibbald of Mornington Wool and Patchwork Centre, a regular contributor to our events. www.woolandpatchwork.com.au
Jennifer from www.embellishalittle.com with her cute buttons.
Sarah from www.sewmaterialistic.com.au with quilting fabrics, patterns and creative kits.
Annie of Designer Stitches www.designerstitches.net with amazing French & Shadow Trapunto.
Jennifer Stockton of Mount Eliza Needlework with very interesting embroidery and fun kits.
Lloyd and Ethel Walton with their lovely variety of woodturning items.
Catherine Clark and Marian Parker from Tasselart  www.tasselart.com.au
And last but not least our own Lyn Wright of Snugglelyn with a huge range of new arrivals of kits and fabrics.

Apart from all the fabulous quilts throughout the hall we had an exhibit of our finished “Confetti Naturescape” quilts that we made during the Noriko Endo Workshop back in April 2013.  This exhibit created a huge amount of interest from the public and we are very grateful to the Shire of Mornington for The Smarty Grant, which enabled us to have a wonderful workshop that taught us all a new technique.  These quilts and the technique will be introduced to various local schools which have a “Textiles” course on their curriculum and will also be displayed in the Mornington Library early in the New Year for the general public to enjoy.

Just around the corner from the above was an MPPI Trading Table with a whole host of items such as soft toys, pin cushions, napkin holders, bags and many other goodies for sale for christmas.

Walking around all this creativity is awe inspiring but also makes you feel hungry and thirsty.  Of course another team contributed to an appetizing array of tea/coffee, scones, yummy sandwiches, sweet slices and cold drinks. The tables in the café were full the whole time.

Of course no such event can occur without the raffles.  First prize was a donation of a sewing machine by Janome, two charming quilts made by our members from the Challenge Blocks of the 2011 Exhibition, a lovely hamper from Made in Japan in Mornington, another hamper consisting of summer and beach products donated by members of MPPI and two vouchers from   the Sports Injury Clinic in Frankston.

Congratulations to all the winners.

The last of our visitors left the building by 4.00pm and packing up and cleaning began with many husbands and members coming to help.

Thank you all for a very happy and successful event.

The next event will be our Christmas break up lunch at the Dava Hotel and with 105 coming we should have a lot of fun and yet more raffles and door prizes.

I shall blog again following the Xmas Lunch and that will be our last one for MPPI Quilting Adventures as Margaret and I have now finished our Tenure as President and Secretary.

It’s been fun and thank you to those who have been involved and acknowledged this blog.

Ciao from Kathie and Margaret

Showcase 2013

On Thursday July 25 Sandra and Margaret attended the awards presentation for this year's Vic Quilters exhibition at Jeff's shed. As you know, MPPI sponsored an award and this time our prize went to the Traditional Two Person Professional category. The winner was Linda Collins from Wonga Park who created a superb red and white quilt based on an antique design she saw in New York City. The machine quilting was done by Karen Terrens. Below is Sandra Fisher presenting Linda with her award.

There was an abundance of truly beautiful quilts that were inspirational and just a bit intimidating at the same time. How do these talented people do it? The Best In Show award was the ultimate prize of five presented to Pamela Brockwell for her amazing creation (detail shown on the right). She hand dyed the fabric, hand appliquéd the pieces and finished the edges with 60 metres of very thin loops of rouleaux (not shown in this picture).

Another special award winning quilt was Linda Steele's 'Christmas Crazy' wall hanging with beautiful hand embroidery.
Here is just a small glimpse of Linda's wonderful skills.

A particular favourite of mine was this stunning red quilt covered with appliquéd white flowers - details unknown.

It was lovely to see several MPPI ladies on the day and I'm sure many others attended the show on the other days.

Snags, Santas and Spending-Up Big

This week our meeting was a huge event as we celebrated Christmas in July with a sausage-sizzle provided by the team from Mornington Peninsula Youth Enterprises. Following a very informative talk by Bob Couchman about the function and activities of MPYE we were treated to snags and onions in bread with all profits going to this great organisation who are on hand every month to set up for our meetings.

It was also our Mini Market Day and we welcomed Maureen Millar from Palm Beach Quilting, Jenny from Sewing Bee Cafe, Lloyd Walton with his wood-turned pieces and our own Lyn Wright with her wares from Snugglelyn. It was impossible to resist the temptation to purchase yet more gorgeous fabrics and threads to add to our stashes; we just never seem to have enough! The displays set up by the traders looked very enticing and we thank them for the effort they made to 'bring their shops' to us.

The atmosphere was certainly festive as our members decorated their tables with Christmas baubles and there was a busy hum as friends came together to sit, sew and chat to make it an enjoyable day.

A SUCCESSFUL RESCUE!

It's  the 4th Thursday of the month which means it's our monthly workshop at Baxter Hall. Today was to be the "Stitch & Rip" workshop tutored by Margaret Stead of Point Nepean Patchwork & Quilters Inc. Yesterday, one day prior, by accident we found a Notice shoved under the side door of Baxter Hall from the Electricity supplier stating that the power would be cut off for the whole day on Thursday!

Our trusted Workshop Coordinator Christine Stevens took action immediately by contacting all the participants and inviting them to come to her home where the workshop would now take place instead of Baxter Hall.  The following photos are the result of  a very successful day.  Well done ladies and congratulations for your quick thinking and generosity Christine!

AFRICAN SAFARI IN JUNE 2013

Despite it being a public holiday, we had a pleasing turn out of 92 members for our June meeting.  We welcomed Leslie Edwards of Quilting Fabrications fame and her sister in law Trish, who displayed many of Leslie's beautifully designed quilts some using vibrant African fabrics. It's amazing how quilts of the same pattern can look so different by using a variety of colour ways.

An African theme was created with a beautiful display of quilts made by many of our talented members.

Thank you to Leslie and Trish for an inspiring presentation.

We can now look forward to our next meeting and our annual "Mini Market" with 5 (perhaps 6) traders coming to sell their wares. We'll celebrate Christmas in July with our sausage sizzle provided by and as a fundraiser for Mornington Peninsula Youth Enterprises.  Mr. Bob Couchman from MPYE will also be there to talk to us about this organisation which we support.

Christmas fare will be provided for Morning Tea and you can join into the spirit of Christmas by bringing decorations for your tables and the hall.  Visitors are welcome.

As you know I shall be overseas for a few weeks and Margaret Roberts will be in charge of this blog in my absence in her efficient manner. Expect to receive some travel updates from me as well.  Thank you Margaret!

By now you will all be preparing your quilts for our Exhibition in November.  Happy stitching and so long!

Kathie and Margaret

P.s. Thank you Georgia for your guidance in putting all this together xx
