Cancer Council "Biggest Morning Tea" Fundraiser

TRADITION ........ It has become just that. Every year on the Second Monday of May MPPI conduct
an event, in the form of a "Shoe Box Auction", to raise funds for the Anti Cancer Council, and this year we'll do it again. The event will be held on Monday May 13, 2013 at the "Studio@PCT", Mornington Peninsula Theatre Complex, Cnr. Nepean Highway and Wilsons Road, Mornington starting at 10.00am.

We are looking forward to another day of activity and excitement with many ladies wanting to outbid each other to acquire the beautiful boxes kindly donated by the members.  This year we shall have the services of Derek Lea and Jarrod Carman of eview Real Estate who have kindly volunteered to conduct the Auction at no cost. We shall also have many raffle prizes donated by our members and the local trade on the Peninsula.

In 2012, thanks to the generosity of all present we managed to raise $4000 for the Cancer Council, a cause very close to many people's hearts and naturally we hope to achieve a similar result.

Visitors are welcome and for a Gold Coin donation you may have a delicious morning tea and cake.

Come and join the fun!

See you then, Kathie

Country Women's Association Mornington Peninsula Group - Creative Arts Exhibition 2013

  Lorraine Bradley  -   Prize Winner

Group President  - Beth Harris and family

Colourful Tea Cosies

Country Women’s Association of Victoria – Mornington Peninsula Group Exhibition – Saturday 20 April, 2013CWA’s Mornington Peninsula Group President, Beth Harris kindly asked yours truly to open their Annual Exhibition today at the Peninsula Community Theatre in Mornington.  I was very humbled and having overcome the initial nerves I stood up, gave a small talk describing what MPPI is about – the hall was so quiet while they listened you could have heard a pin drop- then I was asked to present the Prize Winners with their trophies.  It was a thrill I have never experienced before but enjoyed every moment of it.  I was so glad I was not asked to be a judge as with all the talent present in the hall it would have been a very difficult task.  Congratulations to all the contributors and winners.

The turnout was superb and it was lovely for me to see many familiar faces from MPPI mingling with the CWA members who were very welcoming and charming.Thank you to Beth and members for the lovely Morning Tea and Lunch and for having me as your Guest Speaker. I would like to wish CWA a very successful event which continues until Sunday afternoon at 3.00pm.

After leaving this lovely event I dropped in at the University of the Third Age in Mornington who were also having an Art and Craft Show.  My first stop was in the Craft room where I found more familiar faces from MPPI exhibiting yet more beautiful  inspirational works.  Well done ladies and thank you Jeannie Bridger for inviting me. My next stop was the Art Room filled with lovely paintings and other pieces of art and sculptures.

What a great way to spend a Saturday afternoon.  Thank you all for sharing your art and craft with the community.

Happily, Kathie

Noriko Endo's Fabulous Workshop "Confetti Naturescapes"

This is where it all begins - with our Baby Go Cutter we produce little Confetti pieces of fabric which will create our scene.  Noriko is showing us how! The cutter also allows us, with a variety of cutting dies, to cut different shapes, such as strips, flowers, leaves etc. It's lots of fun and it saves time.
Next we provide a picture of the scene we've chosen and on a background fabric, we place our confetti pieces to form the scene.
The photos below show a completed first layer of the landscapes, but there is much more creativity and stitching to be done before the scene is complete.  This is only the end of day one!

The quilts were almost finished on day 2.  It was a very interesting new technique and a beautifully taught class.  We all went home anxious to finish our quilts so we may present them for the public to view at different venues.  We are hoping to hear from the local Peninsula Schools we have approached to show  our work for the benefit of their Textiles students.
Keep looking at this blog for further developments of this exciting technique.

Noriko Endo is here!

Noriko Endo is here – Welcome Noriko, we’re very excited and looking forward to your wonderful “confetti Naturescapes 2-day class.
Noriko is an artist from Japan who, from a photograph, creates beautiful art quilts with tiny little scraps of fabric.  It is amazing how a scene develops into a piece of art. She loves nature and trees and spends a lot of her  time photographing forests and landscapes for her gorgeous quilts.
MPPI have invited Noriko to share her technique and consequently we’re having a two-day workshop with her on April 15 and 16.  We’ll keep updating this part of the blog and we hope to share what we learn and achieve with local High Schools who have textiles on their curriculum.
The photo above is of Noriko Endo’s “Confetti Naturescapes” book.

Happy Birthday to us!

Patchworkers of Mount Eliza, as we were then known, came together in 1983, mainly due to the efforts of one woman, the late Joyce Aldridge.  With the support and guidance of Vic Quilters Inc. Joyce organized a meeting for interested patchworkers at St James The Less Church in Mount Eliza.  The response was very encouraging and from the initial 18 members, by 1993 when we became incorporated as MPPI.

We are a Not For Profit organization, and it is in our Charter to help the community. So volunteering and charitable work are a major part of belonging to MPPI. To this end we donate our work and conduct fundraising activities such as an annual Biggest Morning Tea, where we have a ‘mystery shoebox auction’, which is always a lot of fun so start planning, it’s coming up in May!

Well, we have just celebrated our 30th birthday and our membership is now 200+, consisting of different age groups, talents and experiences.  All together we share a love for patchwork and quilting, and we are very proud of a few of our wonderful and dedicated ladies, who have remained active members since 1983.

Long time member Ruth Chaplin celebrated her 80th birthday on the same day as MPPI's birthday.
                                     Congratulations Ruth!
